Why a Southern Maryland Arts and Culture Web Site ?
The Southern Maryland Arts and Culture web site began as a direct result of a June 2008 gathering of Southern Maryland arts enthusiasts in response to the Maryland State Arts Council's "Imagine! Maryland"strategic planning effort. Various perceived needs were expressed at that meeting and this web site is an effort to respond to some of those needs, particularly the call for:
* improved tri-county Arts cooperation, communication, and collaboration; * an integrated calendar of events; * a regional website with links to other arts organizations and venues throughout the tri-county region.
Those who attended the meeting believed that a centralized Southern Maryland Arts web site would assist citizens, visitors and newcomers in locating information about arts opportunities in Southern Maryland, while simultaneously building a stronger, more unified arts community. Further discussions led to the realization that other cultural amenities, such as museums and historic sites, often walk hand-in-hand with arts organizations and were in need of the same services.
The Southern Maryland Arts and Culture web site was launched, not to replace the independent web sites of arts and culture organizations and businesses, but to help steer the public to them and to their events. This web site strives to provide a web presence to help local artists thrive, and to unlock the artistic potential and enhance the cultural enrichment of every Southern Maryland resident.
