Southern Maryland Arts & Culture
The St. Clement's Island Museum is nestled on the mainlaind overlooking historic St. Clement's Island, Birthplace of Maryland. The museum shares the history of St. Clement's Island from the first colonial landing in 1634, the Civil War and steamboat era, through the present day with the re-construction of the Blackistone Lighthouse. A 14-minute orientation film places the visitor throughout the expansive history of the island and illustrates a unique heritage and culture of St. Mary's County. A seasonal water taxi provides transportation to the island on designated weekends and special events although pre-arranged chartered tours are available.
The museum also offers visitors Potomac River history through an extensive oyster industry exhibit and watermen's dory boat exhibit. A finely-preserved 19th-century one-room schoolhouse entices visitors through its doors for a glimpse of life in a simpler place and time, complete with desks and potbelly stove! The Crab Claw Museum Store is a treasure trove of unique gifts and keepsakes that keep visitors coming back.
This scenic riverside setting also offers picnic tables and pier facilities for year round enjoyment. The museum lawn also offers the perfect setting for the annual Potomac Jazz & Seafood Festival on the second Saturday of July.
This facility is managed by the Museum Division of the St. Mary's County Department of Recreation and Parks and the St. Mary's County Board of Commissioners and is handicap accessible. To arrange adult group or student tours, special events, hours and directions, please visit the museum's website or call 301-769-2222.
