Adults and teenagers can improve their flexibility and core strength and learn ballroom dances such as the Fox Trot, Cha Cha and Waltz at the Ballet Arts Academy at the Old Waldorf School.
Two new adult-focused classes at the BAA include “Ballroom Dance” and “Yoballates” (yoga, dance and Pilates) and both are taught by former professional dancers.
The ballroom dance teachers, Tracy R. Kirkham and Paula A. Kirkham, began their ballroom dance education in 1986 at Brigham Young University, a school recognized nationally and internationally for American Social and International Style Ballroom curriculum as well as their award winning formation ballroom dance teams.
While performing as members of the BYU Ballroom Dance Company from 1987-1990, the Kirkhams trained in Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of American and International styles. They received high honors on all adjudicated medal exams associated with these courses. While touring with the BYU Ballroom Company, they performed in the U.S., Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia. They also competed separately and together in amateur Dancesport events in Utah, California and Idaho.
After an absence from the dance studio (as the parents of seven children), they have begun teaching again and their first sessions will offer a beginning level experience in Foxtrot, Cha Cha, Waltz and Swing.
In “Yoballates,” Brandye Lee, a certified yoga instructor and master dance teacher, combines yoga, ballet and Pilates for a strengthening and relaxing class. Lee was a featured dancer in the National Gazelle Tour of Disney’s Tony-award-winning Broadway musical, The Lion King and spent three seasons as a dancer with Ailey II, the second dance company of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
Lee teaches at several Washington, D.C., dance schools and is co-owner of a holistic wellness company, B2 Movement for Change.
