Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, Maryland, will host MLK Days, January 14-16, 11am-4pm each day. Each year, Annmarie invites a Maryland artist to create and facilitate a three-day community art project inspired by the life and legacy of Dr. King. The celebration varies from year to year, but it is always creative and designed for the participation of all ages and backgrounds.
This year, Annmarie has chosen the Peaceweavers - Slim Harrison and Brynda Ambush Harrison - for a lively interactive musical performance and creative art program. Musician Slim Harrison will lead guests in a lively exploration of music and songs of peace from around the world. Slim’s interactive performance includes opportunities for guests to play instruments from his large collection of folk instruments. Guests are also invited to work with artist, Brynda Ambush Harrison, to create a giant woven peace wheel. Guests can choose a length of fabric from Brynda’s collection to add to the peace wheel, or they can bring in their own cloth to weave into the wheel. With more than 175 guests expected to help create the peace wheel, it will likely grow to over 6’ in diameter. All guests who help create the peace wheel will be invited to sign and leave a message in the Peace Book. The peace wheel will remain on display in the Main Gallery at Annmarie for the next several months.
Slim & Brynda travel around the world to teach people how to visualize and work towards peace locally and globally as a response to the United Nations unanimous declaration for a “Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-violence”. Open your senses and awaken your soul as you sing along with songs of peace and freedom. Clap your hands, tap your toes, snap your fingers, and sing along with the rhythm and beat of songs from around the world.
Visitors to MLK Days will also enjoy artist demonstrations and hands-on activities. Light refreshments will be available on Monday, January 16. This program is appropriate for all ages; reservations are not required, just stop in and enjoy. The event is free, but guests are asked to make a modest donation.
MLK Days is made possible thanks to the generous support of SMECO, The National Endowment for the Arts, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the Arts Council of Calvert County.
