Waste Land
Sunday, Aug 14, 2011, at 2 p.m.
This film is a recent 93-min. Academy Award Nominee. Contemporary artist Vik Muniz expands his portfolio of intriguing art made from non-conventional material by embarking on a project in his native country Brazil. Going to Rio de Janeiro's largest garbage dump, he utilizes the natural resources there to make portraits of individual workers. He oversees the art, but the locals are its stars as well as the ones who assemble the final product. In doing so, they start to envision a world outside the daily confines of the dump. Their stories and personalities are both engaging and enlightening. To see how this entire experience changed and moved them is undeniably memorable.
Workshops
Explorations in Monotype Workshop
Saturday, Jul 9, 2011, from 1 - 4 p.m. Fee: *$30 for MCAC members / $40 for nonmembers Instructor: Harriett Lawler
Monotype is often called the “painterly print” and was a favorite of the impressionists. A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print where the paint (oil paint, oil-based ink or watercolor) is applied directly to a printing plate. Then, the paint is transferred to the printing paper by running the plate and paper through a press.
There are many techniques for producing monotypes, including subtractive, additive, color blending, and painterly, and they can be abstract or realistic. For this workshop, we will focus on the texture transfer technique, a favorite of students over the years. *Printing paper will be available for purchase at a cost of $1.25 per sheet. Students must bring paper towels and pay a $10.00 lab fee for all other materials.
