Annual Benefit Auction Seeks Local Artists
February 25, 2012 ~ Doors Open at 5:00 p.m.
Little Flower School was founded in 1887 to provide Catholic education to Southern Maryland. Little Flower School is the oldest Catholic school in Southern Maryland and the second oldest in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. Little Flower School is one of the best resources within our local community as we provide a safe environment that accepts the uniqueness of each child and provides students with the opportunity to realize their spiritual and academic potential in a diverse and ever changing world. As we continue to plan for our event, we’re planning on displaying our schools rich history so when visitors walk through our school they will see why we need to keep this school open for our community. We have so much history here at Little Flower School and we can’t wait to share it will all that attend our benefit auction. We will have many photographs dating back to the early days and artwork from current students at LFS on display and available for purchase. In addition to our school’s artwork, we would like to feature local artists in our local community as well. If you’re interested in making a donation to our school’s auction, please contact Joyce Aud at 301-481-7954 or email at danny.aud@verizon.net. We would love to feature as many local artists as possible so please consider making a donation.
This year’s auction theme is “Patriot Pride ~ An Historic Evening”. Our annual benefit auction is our largest fundraising event of the year for our school and we have many exciting opportunities for companies and individuals to join us as sponsors and advertisers. Last year was the fourth year of our benefit auction at which we were successful in raising over $ 35,000 to support our school. A good portion of the money raised was through sponsorships pledged and product donations made by businesses in our community. All of the proceeds from the event will be used to help offset the operating cost of the school and to ensure the future of Little Flower School for years to come.
To be included in the Little Flower School Annual Benefit Auction: Patriot Pride ~ An Historic Evening 2012 as a sponsor, advertiser, or to donate a piece of local artwork to be auctioned off, we ask for commitments (and artwork) by February 03, 2012.

CHARLES COUNTY ARTS ALLIANCE PARTNERS WITH THOMAS STONE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE FOR STATEWIDE JURIED ART SHOW IN EARLY 2012
The Charles County Arts Alliance is partnering with the Thomas Stone National Historic Site to present its first juried art show. The exhibit will be held from February - June 2012. Visual artists throughout Maryland are invited to submit artworks for consideration. The deadline for submission is January 15, 2012.
The show is entitled, "Habre de Venture: Dwelling Place of the Arts." Habre de Venture ("dwelling place in the winds") is the name of the historic plantation owned by Thomas Stone (1743-1787), one of Maryland's four signers of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The 322-acre estate is owned and operated by the National Park Service (NPS) and located at 6655 Rose Hill Road in Port Tobacco, Maryland. Thomas Stone and his wife Margaret are buried at the family cemetery located on the plantation. The beautiful 18th century home is noted for its unusual tidewater architecture, which includes five separate sections connected in the shape of a graceful arc. The home was restored by the NPS and is open for tours Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
The Charles County Arts Alliance invites Maryland artists to propose artworks for the show. This is in keeping with the life of Thomas Stone, whose work as an attorney took him across Maryland. He kept law offices and lived in Port Tobacco, Annapolis, and Frederick, MD. Therefore, the preferred subject emphasis for artworks is on Maryland landscapes, waterscapes, local architecture, heritage, historic homes, wildlife, nature, etc. The art show is in keeping with the NPS's new Call for Action, which has a primary theme of "Connecting People to Parks." The mission of the Thomas Stone historic site is to preserve, protect and promote the legacy of Thomas Stone.
Opening weekend for the show is scheduled for February 4-5, 2012 at the new Visitors Center Gallery at the Thomas Stone National Historic Site. Public receptions are being planned for Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. On Saturday, February 4, a formal reception will be held, with an opportunity to meet and greet the Maryland artists whose work will be on display. In addition, musicians in colonial dress will be presenting special chamber music of the Revolutionary War period. Representatives of the National Park Service, Charles County Arts Alliance, and local dignitaries will provide opening remarks. On Sunday, February 5, the reception will be informal. Complimentary refreshments will be served on both days. In the case of snow or other inclement weather, the opening receptions will take place on the following weekend, February 11-12, from 3:00 - 5:00 pm.
Charles County Arts Alliance President Diane Rausch said,
"We are delighted to be partnering with the Thomas Stone National Historic Site and the National Park Service for the very first time. We are highlighting the rich history, heritage, and natural environment of Thomas Stone's world in a unique way - not through traditional historical interpretation, but creatively through the arts."
Thomas Stone National Historic Site Superintendent Lucy Lawliss said,
"The purpose of this art show is to enhance our connection with the Charles County community, and with the community of artists who are inspired by the historical and natural beauty of Maryland. At the park, visitors experience a truly historic place, the home of Thomas Stone, one of the founders of our Nation. This art exhibit was the inspiration of one of our employees, Ranger Steve Alenskis, a former art teacher, in response to the NPS's Call for Action. We look forward to hosting future art shows, exhibits, and cultural events at Habre de Venture in cooperation with partners like the Charles County Arts Alliance."
The art show will be juried and due to space limitations, only 25-30 total artworks can be displayed. Maryland artists are invited to submit a maximum of three (3) artworks electronically (jpg file) to the Arts Alliance at jury@charlescountyarts.org for consideration. The deadline for submission of proposed artwork entries is January 15, 2012. For more information and juried art show guidelines, visit the Arts Alliance website atwww.charlescountyarts.org, or call 301-392-5900.
