Southern Maryland Arts & Culture

About the Site Editor

My name is Therese Thiedeman and I have lived in Charles County, Maryland off and on since 1993.  While here, I have been actively involved in the arts community for work and play!  I taught music at St. Mary, Star of the Sea School in Indian Head, Maryland for three years, and music-directed the Port Tobacco Players Encore Kids for four years before our Coast Guard family was assigned to New Orleans for a two year tour.  Upon reassignment to the Washington, DC area, we returned to Charles County, and I picked up where I left off.  I was back with the Port Tobacco Players as an actor, director, producer, music director, pit musician, Board member, publicist, Encore Kids Director, Encore Teens Director, etc.  I worked in an arts adminstrative capacity for the Charles County Arts Alliance for four years, an experience which broadened my horizons and introduced me to the arts community in Southern Maryland and across the state as well.  In that capacity, I also attended the meeting described on the "Why This Site"  page of this web site.

Currently, I am a part time Box Office Assistant at the College of Southern Maryland, volunteer publicist for the Black Box Theatre in the Indian Head Center for the Arts, active member of Port Tobacco Players, music minister (choir member and guitarist) and Christmas play director at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Waldorf, and an alto with the Chesapeake Choral Arts Society.  Beyond that, I am actively involved in trying to build true community among artists, arts patrons, arts organizations, and arts businesses in Southern Maryland; hence, this web site.  Such community is a need yet to be met in this region, but overwhelmingly voiced at the regional arts meeting described
here.

Please help by registering yourself as an artist, arts patron, arts business, arts organization, etc.  Please submit your events to the calendar of events, share your needs (or abundance) under Arts Classifieds, discuss the arts in the arts blog, and share this site with others through word-of-mouth, web site links, and social networking sites.  Together, we CAN build a strong arts community here in Southern Maryland.

Special thanks is extended to Kristy Charnock for the creation of the SoMdArts logo!
