Annmarie is pleased to announce Text/Message: A Teen Art Exhibition. This student exhibition showcases the talent, creativity, and perspectives of today's teen culture; undeniably putting a lens on the life, the thoughts, strains and pressures felt by teenagers today. Text/Message: A Teen Art Exhibition opens Saturday, November 13, 2010, and is on view through January 30, 2011.

This exhibit is funded, in part, by the Seahorses by the Bay Project, Sue Apple, Chair. Over one hundred and fifty entries were submitted for consideration from teens ages 13 -18 across the country. Images of all submitted works were posted on Facebook from October 1-15, during which time the public voted and commented on the works. The voting, in conjunction with the jury, evaluated the works and determined the accepted entries in the exhibit.

The Jury panel consisted of Shelby Hacker, Calvert High School; Nancy Proctor, PhD, Head of Mobile Strategy & Initiatives, Smithsonian Institution; Nick Garrett, Founder & Dean of Students, Garrett Music Academy; Joe Ruff, PhD, Public Services Librarian, Calvert Public Library Tim Scheirer, Exhibits Technician, Calvert Marine Museum.

Whether through visual artwork, creative writing, or performing arts, the exhibit incorporates works that conveys what it means to be a teen in the world today.  Take time to explore these works that depict bullying, cyber culture, drugs, family, and friends through photography, music, paintings, collages and creative written works. All works will leave a lasting impact and incite conversations across generations.

In addition, an awards reception will be held on Sunday, December 5, 2010, from 5pm-7pm, where accepted performing artists will be performing.  Also, the Juror’s Choice Awards will be presented at this time. The reception is open to the public. Two additional awards, The People’s Choice Award and the Teen Choice Award will be selected by additional online and in-person voting. The People’s Choice award will be determined from voting on the Facebook Page -    _Text/message: a teen art exhibition at Annmarie Garden

Deadline Jan. 14 for CSM, ArtLinks Piano Competition for High School Students

Applications are available for high school pianists to compete in the College of Southern Maryland and ArtLinks third annual Southern Maryland Regional Piano Competition, to be held April 16 and 17 at the college’s Prince Frederick Campus. Deadline for applications is Jan. 14, 2011.

The high-level juried competition is open to any high school student within the region as an opportunity to promote piano performance and reward and encourage young pianists within Southern Maryland.

Committee chair and CSM Professor Stephen Johnson said the competition is an opportunity for talented, young artists within Southern Maryland to showcase their level of musical expression and technical excellence as they perform on the college’s “magnificent and absolutely superior, handcrafted Boesendorfer.”

All pianists will audition on Saturday, April 16 on the piano, which is the centerpiece of the college’s Ward Virts Concert Series and located at the Prince Frederick Campus. The piano was given to the community by the Ward Virts Piano Project Group as a tribute to the late Ward Virts, a talented concert trained pianist from the region and who died in 1993.

The Sunday performance on April 17 will feature the competition winners as well as a guest artist performing on the Boesendorfer. The finalists will also be presented with certificates and cash awards.

Deadline to apply for the competition is Jan. 14. Applications, as well as the competition rules are available at www.csmd.edu/SoMdPianoCompetition. For information on sponsorships, contact Joann Kushner, 410-257-2627 or Joannkushner@hotmail.com.
